Why is English so important to school children in rural China?
English is one of the core subjects in China's Junior High Graduation Exam (初級中等教育學歷考試) and National Higher Education Entrance Examination (高考), bearing the same importance as Chinese and Mathematics in many cases. Failure to achieve a pass mark in English subjects is often one of the major obstacles that deter school children from rural areas of China from receiving higher education. Tough living conditions and low wages discourage teachers with higher qualifications from pursuing their careers in rural schools, while financial constrains of local administrations mean that many children will not attend English classes until they reach Junior High School, leaving them with the difficult task of catching up from scratch with school children in cities learning English at a much younger age.

Words from participants:

“Everyday is unforgettable, and every moment is unforgettable, I will remember it forever. The happiest moment is that I taught the children to sing " the leaves" song. At the moment, I am confident and I find I also can make my class so vivid” Yang Ping(楊萍), 2008 trainee, teacher of Maogou Primary School (毛溝中心完全小學)

“I’ve enjoyed the teaching process. The happiest moment is when we played the games designed by our team members, especially when the teacher gave us a compliment.” 滕建菊,  2009 trainee, teacher of Baojing County Minzu Secondary School (保靖縣民族中學)
